Two problems arriving at once

Nigerian tertiary institutions are managing a curriculum transition and an assessment crisis in the same period.

The transition is CCMAS. The National Universities Commission’s Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards replaced the previous benchmark statements and shifted programmes toward defined learning outcomes, with a substantial share of content at institutional discretion. Departments have had to restate what their programmes actually produce in outcome terms, and then evidence it. Polytechnics and colleges of education face equivalent work under NBTE and NCCE frameworks.

The assessment crisis is generative AI. Take-home assignments, term papers and a good deal of project work no longer evidence the student. A mark awarded for a written submission now certifies what a model produced, filtered through a student’s judgment about what to submit.

These interact badly. An institution restating its outcomes in capability terms, while its principal assessment instruments stop evidencing capability, has a problem that no amount of plagiarism software fixes.

Why this matters for Nigerian graduate employability

Nigerian employers have complained for years that degree classification is a weak signal of capability, and graduates report the same from the other side. That complaint predates AI; AI simply removed the last of the correlation.
